First aid provision isn’t just a 'nice to have' — it’s a legal necessity and a vital safety net.

Under UK Resuscitation Council guidelines, First Aiders must be given the training and tools to use a structured approach to assess and treat life-threatening emergencies.

Employers must also follow the Health and Safety (First‑Aid) Regulations 1981 by carrying out a First Aid Needs assessment to judge what equipment, facilities and training are needed — just as workplace risk assessments are needed to evaluate other exposure and hazards.

Legal protection for First Aiders is strengthened by the Social Action, Responsibility and Heroism Act 2015 (SARAH Act).

Under the Coporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007, organisations can face criminal liability — including unlimited fines — if a gross breach of their duty of care, including inadequate first-aid provision or poor health-and-safety management, leads to a fatality.
